Port tenant, Ozinga, inflates state-of-the-art cement facility

Landscape of Port

The Port of Palm Beach's visual landscape literally changed overnight following the inflation of a one-of-a-kind cement storage facility. Port tenant Ozinga, a fourth-generation family owned construction materials company, inflated the structure over a three-hour period right after Memorial Day weekend.

The structure’s custom appearance is the result of a cooperative effort between Ozinga, the Port of Palm Beach and the City of Riviera Beach and is designed to enhance the visual landscape of the area and compliment the marine environment.

“The success of this innovative project is due to the great relationship that’s been built with the City of Riviera Beach and the Port of Palm Beach,” said Justin Ozinga, president of Ozinga. “We’re looking forward to having a positive impact on the community here for generations and are grateful for both parties’ involvement and ongoing support.”

The facility will receive and store international shipments of cement that will then be transported to other locations for use in the production of ready-mix concrete.

Ozinga has supplied ready-mix concrete for commercial, residential, public works, landscaping, and excavation projects from its locations in Davie, Doral, Miami Gardens, and Miami since 2017.

The facility is expected to be fully operational by the summer of 2023.

Cargo Tonnage Report

Highlights for the month of April 2022:

-Vessel calls increased by 19.4% over the previous year primarily because of the uptick in cruise activity in the Caribbean basin.

-TEUs increased slightly by 2.8% when compared to the same period last year (YTD).

-Total railcars (YTD) have increased by 18.6% from approximately  7,900 to 9,300 (YTD).

-All cargo tonnage, except raw sugar and molasses, increased slightly over 13% (YTD).

-However, overall total tonnage was up only 1.8% when compared to the previous year primarily as a result of significant tonnage decrease in sugar.

- Congratulations to South Florida Materials, Stonerock Shipping, Tropical Shipping, and Host Agency who are all handling more tonnage.

Ship agent HOST celebrates 10 years in South Florida

HOST is proud to celebrate 10 years of agency, stevedoring and terminal operations in South Florida.

In 2012, HOST opened its Fort Lauderdale agency office, serving ships in the surrounding ports of Miami, Port of Palm Beach and Port Everglades in commodities varying from cement, to yachts, to bauxite and more. Host Agency had been rapidly expanding throughout the southeastern corridor after the acquisition of Amelia Maritime Services and an office in southern Florida was a natural next step to complete our East Coast presence.

Among many vital team members who contributed to HOST’s success in Florida is Fort Lauderdale Operations Manager Erika Cueto. She began her career at HOST as Terminal Administration Manager at the Port, assisting with the first container operation. Eight months later, she joined the commercial team where she helped build HOST’s business and strengthen relationships. Now she oversees the agency office in Fort Lauderdale, where her team coordinates vessel calls and needs for 200 ships per year.

Erika Cueto, Operations Manager

“The reason why HOST can be so successful in South Florida is because of the exceptional communication and work ethic our teams have,” said Cueto. “We take pride in our work and the same is reflected in every operation. South Florida provides only exceptional service and we keep our core principals close to us.”

While HOST primarily does business down south, its reported tonnage at the Port of Palm Beach has grown tremendously. From Oct. 2020 to April 2021 the company moved 165 tons compared to 722 tons during October 2021 to April 2022.

Day of the Seafarer June 25

Seafarers are essential to the international and domestic shipping industry. Without land and sea laborers, world trade would cease, ships would be anchored, and our lifestyle would not exist.

These tireless, invisible laborers depend upon the kindness of strangers to fill the void of being without their loved ones for months and years at a time.

Want to help a seafarer?

Visit the Port of Palm Beach Seafarers' Center's website for information on how you can make a difference.
