The Grand Classica returns home

Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line, the only provider of two-night cruises to the Bahamas with sailings from the Port of Palm Beach, finally welcomed the Grand Classica home.

"The Port of Palm Beach is excited to welcome back the Grand Classica. Some people don’t realize cruising is a major economic driver in the Sunshine state and right here in Palm Beach County," said Port of Palm Beach District Board Chairman Joseph Anderson.
"Before the pandemic, the cruise line was credited for generating more than $100 million in local and state revenue and supporting more than 1,300 cruise related jobs. Think about the businesses that rely on the cruise industry. Every time the cruise ship docks at the Port they fuel up, they purchase food and the crew members spend money in our local restaurants, grocery stores and shopping malls," Chairman Anderson said.
WATCH VIDEO The cruise will conduct a test sailing on June 25. The cruise line will hand select a small group of fully vaccinated passengers to join its vaccinated crew, and they will sail on a two-night round-trip cruise to Grand Bahama Island onboard Grand Classica. To ensure the proper safety protocols have been met, the simulated sailing will include every part of the cruise line's regular experiences including dining, entertainment, leisure activities and shore excursions. The cruise line plans to restart sailings July 2, if they receive approval from the CDC.
Passengers looking to sail once the cruise line receives clearance from the CDC, will need to obtain a Bahamas Travel Health Card from the Bahamian Government, which requires either proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of departure.

The Port of Palm Beach hosted two vaccine clinics in the Port's cruise terminal on June 4 and June 11. Nurses with the Palm Beach County Health Department administered the Johnson and Johnson vaccine to more than 150 cruise and cargo crew members. We want to give a big shout out to Oscar Garcia, who works for South Florida Materials, and Port Security Officer Dunstan Rainford for facilitating a safe rescue of a woman who was hanging on to one of the manatee fenders in slip 3. The woman does not have an association with the Port of Palm Beach. The rescue happened around 1:30 AM on June 10. Oscar and Dunstan used a rope to pull the woman out of the water. Security Manager Rick Placeres also responded to the scene. He reported the rescue to Riviera Beach Fire Rescue and submitted a report to the National Response Center as required by federal regulation. Thank you Oscar and Dunstan for your quick actions.WATCH VIDEO

The Port of Palm Beach recently replaced some critical part on the locomotive that moves railcars in and out of the Port. Over the past 13 years, our locomotive has moved over 210,000 rail cars, so it was time for some new wheels. Director of Planning Carl Baker wrote a grant request to the Florida Department of Transportation, which agreed to split the cost of the wheel replacement 50/50. Southern Motive Power replaced the wheels this month, so there was no disruption in service to our tenants.
The Port's rail team shipped the old wheels to the company that supplied the new wheels. The company plans to resell them after they rebuild the motors and replace the wheels.

Port Commissioners donate to Juneteenth of Palm Beach County In 2020, Juneteenth of Palm Beach County, Inc. was born to help catalyze a shift in consciousness, addressing the systematic inequality that contributes to the seemingly infinite wealth gap, disproportionate health outcomes, and lack of educational opportunity in Black communities.
Juneteenth commemorates the effective end of slavery in the United States.
This year, Port Commissioners made a generous donation to the local organization. Combined, the Board donated $1,100 through the Commissioners Community Grant Program.
