Florida has the second highest number of invasive species for a state besides Hawaii and that is mostly due to larvae entrance through ship ballast water. I would recommend that any ship releasing ballast water anywhere near the Port of Palm Beach be filtered or go through some sort of cleaning process before being released in the water to prevent them from entering our ecosystems. After the disturbing result of taking fish away from the blue heron bridge for an aquarium a year ago I would also recommend that native fish be protected and given more natural areas such as mangrove forests or oyster reefs to improve our waterway. This would also encourage more tourism as people would have more to look at then just sand and oil coated, trash filled water. Strong port leadership should take into consideration long term water health (especially with the threat of algal blooms increasing every year) instead of trying to make as much money and bring in as many ships as possible.
