Maintenance Dredging

Maintenance dredging in the Lake Worth Inlet wrapped up early this month. The hopper dredge Atchafalaya removed approximately 60,000 cubic yards of sand from the inner and outer harbor channel. Removing the shoal deepened the sea floor to 37 feet in the inner channel and 39 feet in the outer channel. This will allow some room for shoaling without the sand buildup infringing on our required depths. The sand was pumped onto the north end of Palm Beach.

Director of Planning and Development Carl Baker and Public Information Officer Yaremi Farinas toured the dredge as the contracting company was working. You can watch the story here

Port of Palm Beach Executive Director Manuel Almira traveled to Washington D.C. early this month. He spoke with several members of Congress about the positive economic impacts if the port were awarded a $1.2 million CRISI Grant to expand rail infrastructure. The rail project would expand the port's capacity and maximum container throughput from 300,000 containers a year to 500,000. Tropical Shipping's Director of Governmental & Community Affairs Jennifer Nugent Hill was also on Capitol Hill to show the support on behalf of Tropical Shipping.
