Port of Palm Beach Construction Allows Record Cargo Capabilities for Florida Sugar and Molasses Exchange

Slip Three, the Port’s southernmost slip, underwent major renovations including increased depth of 35 feet (from 33’) and a northward shift of approximately 10 feet. The improvement will allow vessels to fully load without waiting on a rising tide. While the slip was still under construction, the Louis Howland was able to dock and load a record 16,700 short tons of sugar.

Port of Palm Beach is proud to announce it has entered into an interlocal agreement with Palm Beach County Sherriff’s Office and Riviera Beach Police Department that will allow the port to allot $1.3 million in U.S. Department of Homeland Security grant funding to the departments. The sum is a portion of a $1,999,000 grant awarded to the port as part of the Seaport Cyber Infrastructure Protection Program.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, through the Federal Management Agency, awarded $1,995,000 to Port of Palm Beach from the FY2014 Port Security Grant Program. Funding will be split between Riviera Beach Police Department, Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, the port and its tenants.

PBSO and RBPD will use the funding to enhance its Situational Awareness Platform and monitor the seaport’s cameras, inlet cameras, sonars, coastal RADAR and other sensor and data feeds through an integrated platform system that will enhance maritime domain awareness and incident response capabilities - among other security enhancements.

Port of Palm Beach has provided PBSO with more than 3.5 million in security grant funding since 2007 and RBPD with $1.1 million since 2011.

The Port of Palm Beach Board of Commission approved the interlocal agreement and funding allotments on Thursday, February 18, 2016.
