A Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ #135) has been in operation since 1987. It encompasses
several port owned sites and several warehouse sites in Martin County. Activated
areas include the cargo handling bays of the Port's old cruise terminal as well as the
entire facility of the Port of Palm Beach Cold facility.
Travelpro USA brings in luggage, adds parts and
enhancements, then sells the finished product in the United States as well as overseas.
Merchants Export Group, is a cold-storage company operating a 100,000 sq. ft. facility
under the name Port of Palm Beach Cold. As part of the Port's
Foreign Trade Zone, the company imports, repackages and exports agricultural products,
while benefiting from the exemption of custom duties and excise taxes.
The recent increases in activity represents a
renewed and strongly organized effort by the Port of Palm Beach to focus on the foreign
trade zone as a positive force in economic development. The foreign trade zone is viewed
as an important resource providing cost-effective solutions for local business and
industry for the manufacture and distribution of a wide variety of products.
